Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (38-4,22KOs) has stepped up preparations for his upcoming fight against a yet-to-be-named opponent.

Clottey, better known in the pugilistic sport as “the Grand Master”, told this writer exclusively that he attaches a lot of importance to the clash though it is not a title fight.

He mentioned that the outcome of the bout, one of the undercards on the Canelo Alvarez-James Kirkland fight, has a direct influence on the combatants’ ranking, hence his seriousness.

As a result, the former world titlist promised an impressive showing when he mounts the ring on May 9 at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA.

The top contender said on telephone that “for now, I can say I am getting there in terms of training. I do a lot of road work and combine it effectively with the gym stuff.

“It is not a title shot but I am determined to give my very best. You know the outcome of the fight will determine how high or low they will rank us so that alone is a motivation.”

The hard hitting boxer said in response to his recent inactivity that “it’s true it’s been a while since I fought, but I don’t think you will doubt my fitness and stamina level if you see me train now.”

Clottey, 36, gave a very good account of himself when he last fought in far away Australia, making mincemeat of his Aussie opponent, Anthony Mundine, in their international championship.

Some of Texas’ top talents including James Leija Jr, son of boxing legend Jesse James Leija, will feature on the bill.

Team Clottey are expected to fly out of the country soon to fine-tune preparation for the fight.
